Create a boot CD (start up disc) to reinstall boot loader Red Hat 9

Hello! i want to create a boot CD (start up disk) for Red Hat 9(xfree86 v 4.3.0-2 27 Feb 2003) since my lap top does not have a floppy disk drive. sooner or later i will reinstall windows xp (duel boot)and will lose the boot loader. i would prefer not to reinstall red hat 9 each time i do a clean install of XP. i spend a lot of time configuring it and working through guides and help pages. It's an ongoing project to set things up.

I've got the X driver working for my SiS M760GX VGA card although the colours are so bright it is hard to look at. something is definitely not right there.

Now I'm working on installing the correct sound driver for realtek AC 97.

I have become a Linux enthusiast in a very short time. If anyone could point me in the right direction i would be most appreciative.

Laptop details:

Acer Aspire 3002 laptop AMD 2800
VGA: SiS M760GX (W/PCI) Display
64 MB video memory
Realtek AC 97

Any live distro will do. For example, if Red Hat 9 boots a fully working OS from the CD (and then gives you the option to install to the hard drive) then that will do as a rescue disc. In fact, even if that's not the case, there's a good chance that you can use it to reinstall GRUB/LILO.

What options (if any) does it give you when you boot off the CD? Also, do you use GRUB or LILO?

Just use the 1st RH9 install CD and boot rescue mode. Once booted the / partition is mounted at /mnt/sysimage. To reinstall grub use the following commands
chroot /mnt/sysimage
grub-install
