compile java program under mandrake 10.1

hi, everyone, i just installed mandrake on my laptop, i was trying to compile java program using javac, then realising it is not installed on the system, why is this? have i got wrong version of the mandrake or something? i remember i could use javac when i used slackware, can someone tell me how to install it on mandrake please?

Well you have several choices, one of those choices is to download the J2SE from Sun's web site. You need the J2SE v 1.4.2_06 (or whichever version you prefer) SDK. Here are the instructions. It should be fairly straightforward if you are familiar with using a command line.

I recommend using the .rpm.bin they provide (it extracts to an rpm) which of course is easy to install/uninstall. Don't use the self-extracting binary, unless you really want to.
