What type of CD are you trying to access? Is it a music CD, or a data CD? The approach is different depending on the type of CD.

Music CD's are not mounted to the file system. They are accessed through a player application like Amarok or Audacious.

Data CD's have to be mounted to the root file system, usually by the root user, unless you have it set up so a regular user can mount a data CD.

At a hardware level, you can look in the /dev directory to see if you see any devices such as sr0, cdrom, dvd etc... At least one should be there, looking at the specs for your system would indicate to me you will see several of these. If you see them, the hardware is being recognized. If not, there is a hardware problem.

For clarification purposes, it is a music CD you are trying to play.

Could you please mark the thread 'Solved'. Only the Original Poster can mark it solved. At the top of the thread, you will see a drop box called 'Thread Tools' in there you should see an option to mark the thread solved. It helps other users looking for answers.
