Unhappy Can't reboot in Linux kernel 2.6

Hello!

I've got this problem:

I have HP Compaq nx6110 laptop with Debian GNU/Linux Sarge installed.
I've used kernel 2.4.27, now I'm trying kernel 2.6.8.
Everything works OK, but when I try to reboot laptop,
system freezes. All tasks are terminated regulary, but computer is not
going to reboot, so I must hold powerbutton for 10 seconds...

I'm using GRUB and I've also added command "acpi=on apm=off" to
corresponding boot option. Nothing has happened...
I think that ACPI is working well and because I use laptop,
it wouldn't be fine to turn it off.

Rebooting in kernel 2.4.27 works without any troubles, but I can't use
cpufreq there and I have problems with ethernet.

Thank you.

have you checked to see if it allows you to change runlevels without hanging?

Are you getting the same results in a GUI as you are in a textmode?

some of the questions I would have checked myself.

Unhappy

I've tried to switch runlevel.

I've found that computer shutdown works fine (using "telinit 0") in textmode and GDI too.

While I was in textmode as root, I changed runlevel to 3 and 5 and this switched me to gdm login.

On shutdown I saw this message : "acpi_power_off called" and PC turned off.

But rebooting still hangs (and it doesn't depend on textmode / GDI
or root / my personal non root account )
with reboot command or telinit 6 command.

I've read boot log and found this:

ACPI (supports S0 S3 S4bios S5)

What is this line about? Does it mean that my ACPI doesn't support level 6
- reboot? But I found it in 2.4.27 too and there it works...

This is my log file:

I've had similar problems with my older laptop (Compaq Armada 100s). I was not using ACPI with it, however. The laptop rebooted ok, but halted when the COMPAQ logo appeared. If I remember correctly, I was able to fix the problem at some point by modifying APM setting in kernel configuration. Due to other errors I had to reinstall Linux several times and ended up using FreeBSD with it.

I'd try using APM only (disabling ACPI) and check if it reboots ok. If it does, then I'd dig deeper into ACPI-related information with www.google.com/linux.

---

ACPI (supports S0 S3 S4bios S5)

If I remember correctly these were different Suspend modes. The S4bios is BIOS-operated suspend (to disk?) mode, and either S3 or S5 was suspend mode for operating system -based suspend. Check www.freebsd.org -> FreeBSD handbook. There you will find some information on these ACPI suspend modes.

Btw My Compaq PC is unable to reboot too. The system would shut down ok, but when it restarted, the Compaq logo appeared in white instead of red, and the monitor would go blank and shut down itself.

Hearing from your solution, as I am still a newbie, it seems that I won't be able to fix this.

Look at this link.
I'm a newbie too, but I think you'll find a solution.

Well, it looks that the problem has been solved.

I had to add command "reboot = b" to GRUB's menu.lst config file.

After that system reboots well.
