apm -s...almost

I am very close to getting apm -s to work to suspend my lappy (IBM TP X40). I recompiled the kernel (2.6.9) with APM support, I have acpi=off in my grub.conf file, and have apm started in init 3 and 5. I am using FC3. If I:

1) close the laptop lid
2) press Fn + F4
3) sudo apm -s

it sleeps. The little "moon" light is enabled on the outside of the lappy. No matter what I do to wake the thing up, it does not. Upon waking up, I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner. Any thoughts? Thanks.
