Anyone tried Acer Aspire E5-571?

I'm considering getting an Acer Aspire E5-571 (Note, that's the E5-, not the V5-). Does anyone have any experience installing or using Linux on it? I couldn't find anything on it over at linlap.com or wiki.archlinux.org.

Well I have Aspire E1-571 (not the one you want to buy), I have Debian Wheezy on it. There is a problem with bluetooth and I have not tried Wi-fi (I don't need it), rest is fine. Even USB modem works fine. I personally think that if you install Ubuntu on any laptop that will be fine (This is my guess). I have installed Debian because I am fond of it. Good luck.

Thanks. Looking at Acer UK's spec sheet (Acer US doesn't appear to know the E1-571 exists - go figure), it looks pretty similar to what I'm considering. Which kernel are you on?

I don't have a particularly big need for bluetooth, so that all sounds encouraging. I'll want WiFi, but if that turns out to have issues, maybe a kernel update or some googling will fix it. You've tried the HDMI-out? 3D Accel? (I know Intel HD isn't much loved among gamers, but whatever, I've got consoles for that. 3d accel's just a nice extra here.)

Given the lack of info on linux compatibility sites, I figured finding another e5-571 linuxer here would be a longshot, but was worth a try anyway.

I think what I'll do, once the bonus that's paying for this comes in, is take a couple LiveDiscs (one with 3.16 kernel) up to the store and give them a shot right before buying. I'll post my results here and at the compatibility sites for anyone else.

About the kernel I have
Code:
uname -v
#1 SMP Debian 3.2.60-1+deb7u1
. I donot have any application that checks 3d acceleration. I donot know the term HDMI, but sound card works fine.

I went ahead and bought the E5-571-35LV. I've posted my results with it here:

http://www.linlap.com/acer_aspire_e_15_-_e5-571-35lv

Summary:

- Debian 7.6=FAIL, Debian v8 Testing=OK!

- Bluetooth: Doesn't work out-of-the-box, but I haven't tried fixing it, so maybe it's an easy fix.

- Camera: Seems to "sorta" work, but again, I just tried it once on VLC and that was it. So it might be something simple.

- Screen Brightness: Works, but the default configuration is wrong. Everything *tries* to adjust the screen brightness via "/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/" but that does nothing. The brightness *does* change if you use "/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/" instead.

- Secure Boot: You have to set a BIOS password before it will let you disable Secure Boot. (And it doesn't actually bother to *tell* you that.) You won't have to enter the BIOS password just to boot though, only to get back into BIOS setup.

- Everything else seems to work fine

Overall I'm pretty thrilled with it. (Especially since Linux is now my primary desktop OS, not just secondary machines and servers. Yay! )
