alsa and slackware 11

after installing slackware 11 on my emachine 6810, i've run into an issue with alsa...

after starting xwindows, i consistently receive the following error:

"Sound server fatal error:
cpu overload, aborting"

my audio device is as follows:

00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)

a suggestion that i had received instructed me to navigate to: control center>>sound & multimedia>>sound system and switch my audio device from "auto-detect" to "advanced linux sound architecture". however, everytime i try to make a change to something other than "no audio input/output" i receive the error again, all the while, i cannot apply the change. the process of "applying" reaches about 95% and then repeats itself, continuing to get back to 95%, etc., etc. now i can't even set it back to auto-detect via the GUI control center. grantite, i can run alsamixer at the command prompt and turn the controls back on, but that just reverts me back to "auto-detect".

anyway, i would appreciate any help or suggestion that you may have.

thanks in advance!

This looks more like an arts problem and not a alsa one. As you seem to be running KDE from what you mentioned about sound config a solution would be to turn off arts (= the whole kde sound system) in control center. You don't really need it because most apps provide alsa support and dont need arts (which btw isn't gonna make it into KDE 4 iirc because even the devs are not happy with it).
