Advent laptop 'log on'

Hello people, i have a serious problem with my laptop

the other day, i switched my laptop on, as i normally do, and did some work and went on the internet. After that, i switched it off by going on start menu and shut it down

I then went on later that day, switched it on and noticed that i have been logged off. Oddly enough, i clicked on my user name and it flashes onto my desktop and then logs me straight off after

i dont understand because i didnt log myself off and i did shut it down properly. i do have a feeling that someone might of hacked into it and changed my settings or i have a virus corruption.

i done everything on the F8 option when you first switched it on and i also put it on the safe mode but it still does exactly the same. so i dont know whats going on with it. the only thing i dont want to do is to reformat it because i havent backed things up and i cant afford to lose whats on there.

Please help me, i dont mind what ideas you have!

Which distribution are you using? Which window manager? I'm not even aware of any with an F8 option.
