USB external drive works ok with Arch LTS 4.4.38-1 kernel, but not with 4.8.13-1 - any ideas?

I've posted this in the kernel section because my usb external drive works with the LTS kernel, but crashes the machine with the standard version.
The USB drive also works with the Clonezilla (thank goodness!) and Sparky Linux kernels - recent versions.

Has anyone else encountered this behaviour?
