@bsat the rc.* files are the deprecated equivalent of init.d -- too late again in the chain of processes during boot up.

@jzviagin I found out: in earlier times the kernel modules were controlled by the files in /etc/sysconfig/hardware/*. They are long gone and replaced by udev rules. Since I don't have any documentation on fossils ...

I have not worked on 2.4 but i think the rc.local script is present in 2.4 also.

It is not present in OpenSuSE 11.2 (2.6.31.12-2) but their documentation says it's deprecated. Dunno about the OP's system.
