@bsat the rc.* files are the deprecated equivalent of init.d -- too late again in the chain of processes during boot up.
@jzviagin I found out: in earlier times the kernel modules were controlled by the files in /etc/sysconfig/hardware/*. They are long gone and replaced by udev rules. Since I don't have any documentation on fossils
