Upgrading SUSE kernel

hiii all,

i am in kernel building and configurations

i am running suse 10.1 (kernel 2.6.16), i have just built bzImage (kernel 2.6.18.1 with realtime patch r7)

i put it in the boot directory with the 2 files
and added a new entry in the grub bootloader to boot this image

when i choose the new kernel from the bootloader menu it runs and it is up but the problem is that it doesnt know the file system nor the kde nor everything , just the kernel and the shell and i guess a small ramdisk

how to configure ( kernel, bootloader ) so that when the kernel boots up it access the file system and the kde is up and it became a suse ( 2.6.18.1-rt7) ??

if you please send a clear steps or a link to a website with the steps and modifications.

thanks in advance

Your configuration of the kernel shouldn't affect what run level your computer boots to. Does it just boot to the command prompt? What steps exactly did you go through to configure, compile, and install your new kernel?

Sorry, that makes me laugh, because even if you boot without KDE your still running SUSE linux. Nothing has changed.

i know what you mean but i want it to boot with everything

i am really new with this process so please be patient with me and listen

i downloaded the kernel 2.6.18.1
patched it with patch-2.6.18-rt7
i configured the kernel with default configurations
i compiled it
i copied the arch/i386/boot/bzImage to the /boot/bzImage
i copied System.map to /boot/System.map-2.6.18.1-rt7
i copied config to /boot/config-2.6.18.1-rt7

i configured the grub to make a new option to choose this new kernel to boot with boot options
root=/dev/sda6

when i choosed it, the kernel boots up and display the command line only and cant find the /dev/sda6, i made it and try to mount it also cant mount ... and what is important is that it doesnt see the file system nor the media ... the filesystem is just the basic ramfs with the defaults folders

what should i do or what i missed ? ... i want the kernel to see the media and the file system and also load the kde and became suse like the current um running ( kernel + fs + media + kde )

how to do that ?

thanks in advance.

If it can't see your file systems or the media, that means the default configuration for your kernel apparently didn't include the necessary drivers. Look up kind of hardware your using and include the right drivers in your next kernel.
