Question upgrading kernel from 2.4 to 2.6

My server is currently running on 2.4.21 with CentOS 3.8. I want to upgrade to the latest CentOS 4.4 and 2.6.x kernel. Will this require a OS reload or reinstall of the server? What does it entail? Do I have to backup all the stuff?

According to a tech:

Quote:
Upgrading to the latest centos version will need a reinstallation of the server. This will cause downtime for the server. Please let us know the exact time at which the server should be reinstalled. I would suggest doing it at the non peak time. Please confirm.
When I upgraded from CentOS 3.x to 3.8, it was seamless, no downtime. Even upgrading from 2.4.x kernel to the latest 2.4 only required a reboot. Is there any reason why a reinstall is required?

I just wanted to make sure cause some of the techs are really dumb.

the short answer is that the 2.6 kernel is an entirely different animal than the 2.4 series. updating from 2.4.x to 2.4.x+1 was not really changing all that much.

lots or servers are still running 2.4 or even 2.2, are you upgrading for a reason or just because all the cool kids are doing it?

So does it require reinstallation / OS Reload? Everything will be lost?

I'm not upgrading from 2.4.x to 2.4.x+1, Upgrading to 2.6 because 2.4 does not natively support SATA drives and due to the iowait issue with 2.4
