to install a virtual kernel on a system

i have heard of a company whose server got hacked by a hacker who installed a virtual terminal on that server and the authorities didnt realised that something had happened to that system.the hacker took all the necessary details and then destroyed the terminal.
i would like to know if we can install a virtual terminal on a system...??

As far as I can tell from what you've written, someone used telnet or ssh to gain unauthorized access to a system. There's nothing magical about a vt.
