setting up a new kernel

hello, I am using Mint Linux 11. I downloaded a newer kernel, and want to be able to use it. I get a no screen found error, so, I know I have to edit a file, but, I have forgot where to start. can I do this from a terminal, in my running install, or do I need to modify everything from the screen for the new kernel? Thanks

Please post more details about your machine, is it 32 or 64 bits?

Sorry,It is a AMD 64x dual core 3800+ system, and the kernel I am running now is 2.6.38-8-generic. I think the upgrade I downloaded is -12-generic, off the top of my head. I will check the link above, I appreciate the help.

AFAIK, with Mint and Ubuntu, you don't have to edit anything - just reboot.

When I let it boot to the new kernel, I get an error that says " no screen found". I know I have to edit a file, to get a usable 600 x 800 screen to finish the setup, but, I can't remember how to get to the file.

You are talking about xorg.conf

That's the one. Can I use something like midnight commander to copy the working section I have to the new kernel? Then when I get a working install do the rest of the tweaks?Thank you.

xorg.conf doesn't reside in the kernel. You can find it in /etc/X11/
