Question Question about sync_global_pgds in arch/x86/mm/init_64.c

sync_global_pgds are called after new entries are added to current page tables. For example, it is called at in side vmemmap_populate.

I understand why and how it syncs pgd globally. I am confused by why it does not sync lower levels of page tables like PUD/PMD as well. Is it because of performance concern? Yet, if lower level of page tables are not synced here, when will they be synced.

Thanks in advance

I guess the short answer is that everything in the mm codeset is a performance concern.

You might get a more authoratative answer by starting at the mm wiki here - it has a link to the mail-lists.
