I thought that was clear from the first post of this thread.

The question was about going from two core in one package to four cores total in two packages. And the claim is his supervisor is sure that transition requires reinstall of the software.

We all agree that your kernel is either SMP or not SMP. If you managed to find a non SMP kernel, it couldn't use the second core in the first package. With an SMP kernel, it will be able to use two cores each in two packages.
