i686 = 32 bit

Whilst some distros are starting to drop support for it, there's still plenty of 32-bit distros. Puppy and antiX are popular ones, so check which kernel versions they use.

Depending on the hardware, you might try Lubuntu (LXQT flavor of Ubuntu) 18.04 LTS x86 version.
IT is currently expected to be EOL on April, 2023

You can use Kernel 5.0, by installing the following meta packages

sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04 linux-headers-generic-hwe-18.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04

Slackware supports 32-bit systems. openSUSE's Tumbleweed is still supporting those systems. (or, at least, was as of a year or so ago; haven't checked lately.)

Have you visited the sites for Linux distributions that you're interested in to see what they're supporting nowadays? Personally, I'd start there.

Good luck...
