Knowing dates of Vanilla Kernel Release

hi,

I want a feature which is there in the 2.6.23-rc3 prepatch at www.kernel.org. Right now the stable release of the kernel is 2.6.22-5.

Is there any way by which we can know (or at least predict) when those features will be merged into the stable release?

As far as I understand the prepatch (release candidates) is not a stable code and is more kind of in the testing stage, right?

Hi.

If the feature is in .23-rc3 , then it should be included in the .23 release. There shouldn't be any difference in functionality between the rcs and the final release (unless something is found to be badly broken).

Check the kernel.org RSS feed:
http://kernel.org/kdist/rss.xml
for when it's released.

And yes, the release candidates are not stable, since they haven't been sprinkled with holy penguin pee. Seriously.

Generally plan for 2 to three months.
2.6.22 went out the door on July 8th. - do the math.

If you need the function and the box is non-production, slap it on. Release candidate kernels need all the testing users we (as a community) can find.

Thank you guys for the reply. So does that mean the code in RC versions (release candidates) are OK to be applied to my existing kernel. I mean are they relatively stable than the testing code/kernel?

you shouldn't use rc kernels if you expect stability.
