Is it possible to downgrade from 2.6.24 to 2.6.22 vanilla on ubuntu?

Hi!

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 at this moment which uses kernel version 2.6.24. This is a server edition so no gui no audio no nothing just lan card driver is needed.
I would like to use linux-vserver on that box. I know that ubuntu implements lots of patches on the kernel. Do you think that it is possible just to download a vanilla kernel, use the default settings that comes with ubuntu (I think the config file is in /boot/ isn't it?) apply the proper patch to the version, compile it and then be happy?

That would be just great but I guess it is not that simple, is it?

Thanx in advance

Well you could certainly apply the Ubuntu patches to any vanilla kernel you wish, it is just a matter of getting the patches for that kernel release.

As for the configuration, it is no problem using an older configuration file on a newer kernel release (make oldconfig), but I have to admit I have never attempted the reverse. I assume it would mostly work, but the build process is going to complain about not understanding the configuration lines that don't have anything to correspond to them in the older kernel.
