More info please. What distro? What device? What type of connection (USB?)? What have you tried? What errors (if any) have you received?

I have a Maxtor 320 with a USB connection that auto-mounted as soon as I plugged it in - even with a NTFS file system. It has since been rebuilt with ext3 file systems, but it still plugs in and auto mounts without any need to change the kernel.
