genkernel error

I'm trying to edit my kernel config with:

genkernel --kernel-config=/usr/src/linux/config --menuconfig bootloader=grub all

This produces an error message that:

ERROR: Failed to compile the "mrproper" target...

I tried it with genkernel 3.4.8 and 3.4.9 and get the same results. I'm speechless... does anyone know what this is and how to fix it? Sorry I couldn't produce the entire screen, but the laptop it's running on doesn't even have a desktop manager installed.

god knows, make mrproper removes any custom .config files though....
what's wrong with

make
make modules_install
make install

?

You might want to look through the log file, I believe it's /var/log/genkernel.log to see what exactly went wrong.
