So it turns out that the new kernel version released for Debian Stable on 8 September 2011 has broken some things. You're no longer able to run gnome-system-monitor as a normal user, and I experienced random kernel oops messages all day long. I even used Google Chrome to google "Virgin Mobile", and Chrome froze and threw up a kernel oops. It happened to me 4 or 5 times today, so I downgraded my kernel package back to the one I had before the upgrade and alleviated those issues.
For those of you who may also be having similar problems with the kernel upgrade, you can undo it with this command:
Note: Replace amd64 with your respective architecture.
Code:
aptitude install linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64=2.6.32-35
