Your problem isn't the kernel. Notice it says "Error: mkfs.xfs file not found." that means that it couldn't find the mkfs.xfs program, meaning you need to install xfsprogs.i386 (found by "yum provides mkfs.xfs"). What made you think that a file not found error was a kernel problem? A kernel problem will relate to a missing module, and you'll see errors in /var/log/messages as well as the output of dmesg. Once you install xfsprogs.i386, your command above will work fine.
