compilation of new kernel


i had compiled the kernel 2.6.18 on 2.4.20 and while booting iam getting error can you give me the solution
kernel panic - not syncing: vfs: unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)

This error is showing because the kernel can't mount root partition, make sure your file system in kernel is bulit-in not model and then it will working well !.

It is the problem with the initrd probably.Are you sure the initrd is right for the new kernel? After compiled the new kernel, you must create a new initrd for the kernel.
And the new kernel must have all the drivers for your computer.In your question, there isn't enough drivers for your computer.At least, there is not the hard disk drivers for your computer.
