At what point does the virtual address begin to involve the work?

When I was learning the linux memory management I suddenly come up a question that is when does the virtual address begin to involve the work of the system?

Does it(virtual address) begin its work when the system bootstrap?

I do not really know what do you mean, but usually it is always in use.
