Question [Kernel] HDD module

Greetings!
I built a minimalist linux system from scratch and now I want to boot it from qemu. So, I installed grub2 on the qemu harddisk, configured it, made a initrd image and booted up qemu. My problem is that the hardisk doesn't get detected at all. There's no sda under /dev and I can't mount the root filesystem so I just get dumped into a shell. I tried modprobing some of the common modules like ext4, libata and sd_mod but nothing works. My question is what is the module that I should load to in order to make my kernel detect the qemu harddrive?
P.S. I tried converting the qemu image into a virtualbox harddisk and tried virtualbox running it in there but it's the same.
Thanks!

The last time I ran CentOS in a VM, the genu-img disk came up as a SATA drive named /dev/hda.
