XFree crash - fedora 1 with generic drivers.

hi, I just installed fedora core, and it detected my graphics card, sorta, but put it with the vesa drivers. cool, nothings changed sinced redhat 9 then :-d then I opened up 'display config' and went extatic as it said radeon 9600, thoughts of burning my windows xp cd shot past, I was all ready to use linux for good as it will support opengl... but there's a hitch.

I selected ' radeon 9600 ', from the list, and loged off ( restarted xfree ), and then whever I logon, click, etc, the whole computer freezes, and I have to reboot...

use xf86config or edit the /etc/X11/XF86config file yourself by changing the line in your graphics section from driver "radeonsomething " to driver "vesa" to fix your problems for the second, then install either dri or gatos drivers (http://gatos.sourceforge.net) or ati drivers (www.ati.com) i would personally say to use dri and you can do a search on the forum for how to get it woking then look into a program called atitvout or the gatos drivers to get working tvout from your card im not sure how well that will be supported but it worked for my radeon 7500m using dri and atitvout 726 fps in glxgears

Those gatos drivers do not support the radeon 9600. If fedora have included drivers they must work - so what could cause the crash ?

fedora didnt necessarily include drivers, most likely its hardware detection knowing exactly which card you have and using that information to select the best drivers with xfree most likely the generic radeon drivers, adn even if they did include drivers most likely you would want the newer and updated drivers from dri or somewhere like that yes i know fedora just came out no that doesnt mean the drivers are updated, and just now reviewing your first post it didnt put it with radeon but instead simply with vesa which is far more generic being nearly any card out there will work with it...just not well...i suggest possibly starting by using the command xf86config to change your driver to radeon unless you already know how to edit your xf86config on your own then get dri or the ati binaries, dont use the in kernel dri unless your using 2.6 because they dont work with xfree 4.3

sorry about that i was tired. When im tired i dont bother with punctauation and separation of ideas, other than that i dont see anything that would cause you to gripe about my english with the possible exception of typos
