Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

wireless hardware compatibility

Why is it in the Linux world, thousands of good Linux programmers spend thousands of hours and thousands of dollars creating more and more pretty desktop distros with which a user cannot get online, because the Linux kernel does not contain a driver for all pieces of wireless computer hardware? Thousands of pretty, but totally useless, desktops is not what we need! We need wireless hardware compatibility!!

I don't know what are you talking about, thousands of hundreds of users are online. The right approach would be to let people know what driver are you talking about, and ask howto get it to work, before you start complaining about it.

Sadly your statement(s are nothing more than 'FUD' or plain old misinformation.

I do know man hours are used throughout the Linux community developing drivers and even kernel development through volunteer open source work. As to thousands of dollars, most work is via volunteer therefore not monetary. Commercial Linux is supported by the vendor, as in Red Hat or other commercial enterprise. IBM is another big user. RedHat & IBM are major players when it comes to Linux development thus providing resources back to the community.

Big problem with new wireless chipsets is that manufactures will not release information. Most work is reverse Engineered by volunteers that take vast amounts of time investment to get something together. Sometimes the community is directly involved via testing and providing feedback.

If you are having issues with a particular chipset then please provide information relative to that issue.
