wifi keeps dropping on my home connection on this laptop
At home I normally connect to polar5G, my wifi.
This morning I lost the connection 3 times. I thought it was a service provider problem, restarted the routers.
But it seems the problem is this computer: an HP laptop 15s-er1004AU
My older laptop has no problem. Girlfriend has no problem. She more or less only uses her phone.
Stranger still: now I am connected through my mobile phone hotspot to write this and it hasn't dropped yet.
When I start I see a message, coming from the bios I presume, from HP about going to their remote diagnosis site, but that will only work for Windows I presume.
Does this mean my wifi card is dead?? How come it works through my phone??
I looked at this earlier and had an absence of clues. (I've been suffering a similar issue lately with one of my machines, but a reboot of the router seems to have helped--which leads me to think I may need a new router, as my router is getting a bit long in the tooth, but that's another issue.)
For testing purposes, you might consider booting to a Live CD/USB of something not *buntu and testing whether you can connect and stay connected for a reasonable period of time. If you cannot, it may be a hardware issue.
Have you looked at the log files? They might provide some hints about the dropped signals. It's a very long shot, but it might be worth a try.
All afternoon, I have been connected to the net via my phone. At home, I switch the phone data off and connect to my router, polar5G, the same one my computer keeps dropping. No internet problems via my phone.
Could you tell me which logs I should check??
I have a live CD, it is Ubuntu, but I can try, see if the connection stays!
I remember when the guy installed the 5G internet, he said, the 5G signal is weak, hardly reaches to the next room.
Well, it must have got weaker.
Saturday, I pulled the router out from its normal spot near the TV in the living room, checked all the cables.
I put my computer on the living room table, very close to the router.
I connected to polar5G no problem. Waited a while, connection didn't drop.
Normally, I use my laptop at home in the little bedroom, just off the living room.
I moved the router on to a cupboard nearer to the little bedroom. Now I can connect again, without dropping!
I have a little blackbox, its a wifi signal amplifier. I put that in the little bedroom, now I can move the router back to its usual spot, out of sight.
Distribution: Ubuntu based stuff for the most part

Rep:
If you have the option to use a 2.4G connection of the router, then try that. The 2.4G bandwidth penetrates walls better then 5G.
My 2.4G signal shows at 97% were I sit right now, and the 5G shows as 64%, and there is just the 1 floor it has to pass thru. Any benefit to 5G is lost when you can't connect.
Or look into making one of the parabolic dishes to boost the signal.

Reason: add dish
