Question What happens during the CD-ROM test?

At the beginning of the Red Hat 9 installation, you are prompted to test each CD-ROM that you will be using for the installation.

I have had mixed results when testing the CD-ROMs that I created by downloading the images from Red Hat's website. For example, my first CD-ROM failed the test until I replaced the Hard drive in my PC. However, the second CD-ROM failed the test even with the new hard drive.

What exactly happens during the CD-ROM test? Is the hard drive tested as well?

It's doing an md5sum of the cd. It should match the md5sum of the iso. The cd could be good but you might be getting read errors from the cdrom. This could be due to a lot of things. One possibility, bad ide cables or improper ide configuration(check jumper settings). The fact that the problem disappeared when you changed your hard drive could indicate a jumper problem or cable problem. It also could be a dirty cdrom or a problem reading the media. You could also try burning the cd at a slower speed(4x).
