Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

wanting scanning program or script to compare workstation hardware sets

I have several "almost identical" workstations (laptops) that I want to compare. I'm looking for a program or script:
  • run on each workstation
  • get a data file that describes the workstation hardware set
  • compare the two workstations

I know that I could use the several ls* utilities along with things like sysinfo and hwinfo. Armed with all of that output, I could roll my own "report" file and use diffuse or similar.

I'm hoping that somewhere in the enterprise user world there is a better utility (suite). My problem is not an "asset management" exercise, but it has many of those same attributes.

Cheers,
