USR 5686E External Serial Modem

I am replacing a Zoom External serial modem with a USR 5686E V.92.
I am using RH Fedora 1, with the GNOME interface.

In kppp, I can interrogate the modem and it returns results.

But when I try to dial (no initialization string set), I get the dial up but the terminal window shows a stream of escape sequences and the connect to my isp never occurs.

When I boot up to WinXP (bite my tongue), I can log onto the isp ok with it so I don't think there are any issues using the factory default settings.

This is NOT a winmodem. It has its own controller and shows at the website that it is Linux compatible:

http://www.usr.com/products/home/hom...s&sku=USR5686E

Would anyone have any experience level with this modem and be able to recommend how kppp and the modem should be configured?

Thanks in advance, and thanks to LinuxQuestions.org for providing such a GREAT service!
