Slackware-11.0

I'm running a USB/PS2 mouse. It only works on PS2 port. If plugged on USB ports it can't be detected at boot. The mouse has no problem. It works on another Linux on USB port.

The USB ports on this PC also work without problem, 4 on motherboard and 2, as extended, connected to the front-side of the case. USB stick/thumb drive work on all ports. It can be mounted and its content can be read.

Please advise how to check and rectify this problem. TIA

Could you post the output of lsusb? (might need to be root)

Try including noapic or noapci or apci=off. Some motherboard may need to have USB mouse set to BIOS instead set to OS or set to legacy.

Another problem that could be the cause is a power supply issue.

I recommend using PS/2 for the most reliable and stable connection for both keyboard and mouse. Using USB input devices like a keyboard or a mouse is a disadvantage because they consume a lot of current that a USB flash drive may not work unless you use a powered USB hub.

Sorry I made a mistake Slackware-11.0 has been erased. slamd64 is now running on the same box. USB mouse works and poweroff on shutdown.

Previously on Slackware-11.0 USB mouse failed to work and the system was not poweroff on shutdown only system halted.

But on slamd64 LILO failed to boot. I have to boot it via a floppy. Strangely the bootload, LILO, saved on the floppy during installation was found becoming GRUB. I found this happening after mounting the floppy. I don't know how to explain. No GRUB was offered to install at time of installing slamd64.

During the installation, when YOU are offered the choices for identifying as close as possible YOUR mouse type...Choose the PS/2 setting instead of the High-lighted offering or the USB offering. If YOU know it will work on the USB offering, stay with it. Most Distros I've used prefer the PS/2 choice. I use an adapter that plugs the PS/2 end into the Linux Box and the USB end into the mouse line-plug. The PS/2 choice also has a choice for wheel, buttons and etc. Click on PS/2 and read all the choices before accepting the first one. There are usually other choices after the first one closer to YOUR mouse device.
