USB drive requires 2 tries to mount

Each time after I plug in my USB drive, my first attempt to open /media/usb-drive gives this error message in ROX-Filer:
Quote:
Mounting /media/usb-drive
mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist
Mount failed

Done
There was one error.
However, when I go to /media/usb-drive for a second time, it always mounts successfully and I can access the drive's files.

Why should the first attempt always fail?

The relevant line in my /etc/fstab file is
Quote:
/dev/sda1 /media/usb-drive vfat rw,user,noauto 0 0

it depends on how patient you are.

your distro and mine (Mdv) use HAL to mount removeable media and mine takes a few seconds to bring up the prompt.

Hal can also be affected by dbus according to a thread I read.

so how long are you waiting before clicking on mount folder?

I suspect that the first attempt fails because it is not yet finished scanning. Open a terminal as root and issue "tail -f /var/log/messages" and you can see what happens when you insert a USB device. When it says "finished scanning" you can mount without getting this message.

aus9: You're right, if I wait several seconds before trying to mount the drive, it works.
Bruce Hill: Well, no "finished scanning" message appears, but new lines stop appearing after these are written:

It would be nice if ROX waited a few seconds instead of giving the error message, but I guess this'll do.

Sorry, I don't remember where the "finished scanning" message came from atm. When I posted to you I was offsite and didn't have a USB cable to plug a device into the laptop I was using.

Your kernel output is fine. Now you'll need to find out how Rox is configured, so that you can tell it to wait for a certain amount of seconds before mounting the devices. Can't help you there - no Rox on this box.
