I recently bought a Canon EOS Rebel and would like to know how to launch a script when the camera is detected via USB. Is there an event trigger or system in usbfs that can call scripts? If so, I can create a script to detect, synchronize and catalog the camera memory to the drive. If someone less technically inclined hooked it up, I would like the script to handle all the photo management. Any pointers to othe resources or help would be greatly appreciated.
Gphoto would definently help in getting the files, but I am looking for an automated way to do this as soon as the camera is connected. This way a person can hook up the camera and it would synchronize the files without them knowing or caring.
When I plug my camera in to the usb port, gtkam opens a query telling me that it has detected a camera with pictures, do I want to download them? ... I can't explain to you how it works, it just started doing it the first time I plugged in the camera.
Thanks for all the feedback regarding hotplug and gtkam; I will definently check these out. It looks like I have bigger issues now though.
I plugged my new Canon Digital SLR Rebel and am able to see it in the /proc PCI bus, but gphoto2 doesn't manage to autodetect the camera. I verified the camera is setup for a USB/PC connection and is alive at the time I try to autodetect (in case that is an issue.) My next step is to compare the vendor code on my model to what is in gphoto2's list for the Canon Rebel.
Just wanted to post a follow up to this post. I was able to resolve the camera problem by setting it to PTP mode. Once I did this, gphoto2 was able to see the vendor code correctly and start downloading the images.
