USB 2.0 stalls USB external HD

I hooked up an external USB hard drive to my Mandriva 2006 system via a USB 2.0 hub. I used this drive to back up key directories. All seemed well. The drive responded quickly.

A month or so later, when I open a directory on the drive, the connection quickly slows down and stalls for a long period. Sometimes if I leave it on and come back to the directroy later, the files in it will be available.

What could account for this slowing down and stalling problem?

Buggy usb-storage module. It is better to use firewire than USB for hard drives or other mediums. USB is designed to handle scanners, printers, keyboards, mouse, bluetooth, and other devices that does not exhaust the bandwidth.

I always get stalling when using USB hard drives even though I am using kernel version 2.6.14. You can try using FAT32 or EXT2.

Thanks for the information. I am sorry to hear it though. I guess I will have to use W98 to back up files on this drive. It is formatted Fat 32.
