Hi,
I currently have a XP 3000+ processor and going to upgrade it to a 64 3500+.
Is it possible to convert my current Mandriva installation to 64 bit or do I need to reinstall everything?
As long as the old CPU and the new CPU use the same socket, you should be able to easily swap out the old and drop in the new. As for the distro, unless you want to do a package-by-package manual upgrade, then realistically the best option would be to just reinstall the 64 bit version. (I'm not aware of any distro that has an i386 to 64 bit migration utility) Good luck with it -- J.W.
You can not just insert an Athlon 64 in a socket 462 because it will not fit. You have to buy a whole new motherboard that has either socket 754 or 939.
At this point compiling programs for 64-bit is glitchy. Just stick with 32-bit programs until 64-bit compiling becomes mature.
First Thank you for your answers.
I know about the motherboard and I am now running with an Athlon 64 bits.
Is it really useful (I mean a good performance impact) to reinstall a 64 bits distro ? Because i'm currently running on a i686 distro and will perhaps move to the 64 bits version.
Also if I have to move to 64 bits is there a way to transfer apps and stuff like that ?
