Hi Sir
your problem i that the model 1806 is a voice win modem meaning it's for windows only pretty much it's possible to get it running but your best bet is to just go oyut and get a model performance pro Modem its by US Robotics and it works on the first try no problems ive used it on about 5 distros mandrake freebsd gentoo (the best system to use and my currant for about 3 years) readhat and suse i not sure if i used it n any others.
The best spot to get it is from "http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=25-104-131&catalog=18&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1"

or www.newegg.com

cuz the struggle to get it running is unbearable

hope that provides some help

I think I had to go to u.s. robotics web site & get a linux driver. Can't remember for sure it's been to long & I have a cold. Good luck.

Oh if you have any winmodems laying around you might want to look here. My boy got a winmodem to work in linux once.

ok.........
i went to linmodems.org, i sent the email to discuss@linmodems.org & its UNDELIVERABLE!!!!!!

heres the results of the "modemdata.txt" file that the proggy generated:

The most recent update of scanModem accessed at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz
should ALWAYS be used!! Current UPDATE=2003 December 25
URLs to cogent advice are regularly entered and updated, and your problem may be solved therein.
If further help is needed, send a description of your problem to: discuss@linmodems.org
with this ModemData.txt Attached, using the following in the email Subject Line:
scanModem, redhat kernel 2.4.7-10
Always send this ENTIRE ModemData.txt. It includes subtle diagnostic ouputs needed to best guide you.

14f1:2F13 (USR OEM)
14f1:2f14 3COM/USR

Vendor 163c is SmartLink, http://www.smlink.com/ with EXCELLENT Linux support!
Downloads from ftp://ftp.smlink.com/linux/unsupported/ with some backups at:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/
slmodem-2.8.1 and later versions support multiple modems on the same PC.
The slmodem-2.9.n drivers support MANY non-SmartLink soft modem chipsets
under AC'97 Controllers. The slmodem series is compatible with 2.6.nn Linux kernels
If there should be mis-dialing problems either use slmdm-2.7.10 or upgrade to a 2.6.nn kernel.
The modem port is /dev/ttySL0
Please see the support compatibility table within ModemData.txt.2
The controllers with an in line + are compatible.
There may be a warning about a not-SmartLink modem as the drivers load.
But just proceed with modem functionality tests as described at the end of ModemData.txt.2

Beginning with slmodem-2.9.4 , insertion of the drivers will be accompanied by
a report on the softmodem chipset identity. This provides directions to the appropriate
soft modem software, if slmodem-2.9.4 cannot serve. Thus include the chipset identify
information along with ModemData.txt, when requesting help from discuss@linmodems.org
Watch for this chipset information through kernel messages by:
# tail -f /var/log/messages &
before insertion of the modem drivers.

======= PCI_ID checking completed ======
Update=2003 December 25

Some installers may alternately be found by searching for ltmodem at:
http://rpm.pbone.net/

The following information blocks just query some ppp support items.
====================================================
grep ppp /etc/modules.conf
-------------------------------------

-------------------------------------
Be sure to read the section about ppp related modules and aliases in ModemData.txt.2
DEVPPP=crw------- 1 root root 108, 0 Aug 30 2001 /dev/ppp
A /dev/modem symbolic link is not present

No devfsd.conf file sound, indicated absense of the devfsd daemon package
for device file system (devfs) symbolic link support.

The ModemDriverCompiling.txt is a MUST READ,
if you are not experienced in configuring kernel-source/
or get "Unresolved symbols" upon driver insertion.

Most recent WinModem fixes are in: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/FAQ.html

Hi,

If you read the output carefully, you can see that you are not in much luck...

12b9 is US Robotics. acquired by 3COM
:0062 erk41926a-0.6 usr 56k internal modem
;1006 3cp803598 Voice WinModem no Linux support
:1007 ERL3263A-0 DF GWPCI PC99 WinModem no Linux support
:1008 3cp803598 is Supported by the standard: serial.o
Though the following carry USR labels, they may be supported by Conexant drivers:
http://www.linuxant.com
14f1:2F12 (3COM/USR model 3094-3095)
14f1:2F13 (USR OEM)
14f1:2f14 3COM/USR

Basically there are no drivers specifically for your 3COM /USR modem. It recommends that you can try some of the drivers from www.linuxant.com

Go to their downloads page and follow the instructions to download and install the HSF softmodem driver. Try it and see what happens.

You will need root access to install it properly. Try the rpm version that matches your distribution first, as a last resort try the source version.

I checked the usr support page, they only have windows drivers for your winmodem.

If the linuxant drivers don't work, spend $20-$30 on a pci card and you won't have any more problems.

Good luck.
