Unfortunately, Trident support is little to nil in the case of some distributions.
I've got a Pavilion N5470 with a Trident CyberBlade XP (no relation, made before Windows XP) card and had a heck of a time just getting it to WORK with X. However, you can do so. CollegeLinux was my first distro and it recognized the card. But support was REALLY poor (I'm talking very slow graphics with poor quality). Then, I moved to SuSE (as it was capitalized at that time) 8.2.
As a general rule of thumb, SUSE (as it is now capitalized) has very good hardware support. I'd suggest you try it out. Keep in mind, however, that you won't and probably will never get 3D acceleration supported in the driver (apparently Trident was quite reluctant about releasing specs for it, but I'm not sure of the whole story).
So sorry for the bad news.
