Have you run the fglrxconfig command?
If not, make a copy of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf in case things would go wrong,
and then run the command 'fglrxconfig' as root (assuming the ati drivers are installed).
You will have to answer a few questions, the defaults should be good in most cases, with one big exception. You will have to enter the correct vertical and horizontal sync ranges. Don't go with the default if you aren't sure it's correct.
After you're done configuring, press ctrl+alt+backspace to restart the x-server. Now you should using the ati-driver.
In case this didn't work, and the x-server won't start, just login as root and do a "cp <path-of-your-old-xorg.conf> /etc/X11/xorg.conf"
