Suse 10.0 x86_64 can't play music cd

Hi all,

Dell 9150
Intel 650HT 3,4Ghz
DVD Rom
DVD RW
Creative labs Audigy LS
SuSe 10 x86_64 Retail

I am having a strange problem with playing music cds. The cd seems to play, cddb does the lookup and recognizes the tracks, but no sound comes out. It worked with Winblows but not after installing Suse so I know the hardware is Ok.

First, I figured out that Suse 10 was using /dev/sr1 for media. That was linked to my DVDRW, which I didn't like, so I relinked it to my DVD Rom.

cd /dev
rm cdrom
ln -s /dev/sr0 cdrom

no problem

Installed all the Packman packages for multimedia, (xine, lame, libdvdcss, kaffeine, etc...etc...)

I configured GRip and I can convert my music cds to mp3 and play them from my hard drive with no problem.

Kscd acts like it's playing the tracks, cddb lookup works and soforth, but there is no sound.

Xmms, real player 10, and amarok react the same way.

Another strange thing is that there are no CD devices when looking at Kmix, AlsaMix, or any other mixer.

When I try to adjust the sound settings for my card with Yast, it says there are no configurable modules for this device with the exception of master volume. ??? weird!

Thanks in advance!

Chances are that you will need to enable 'cd audio extraction' in kscd/xmms etc. I mention those two apps because I know that both can do this. Other than that add an analog cable from the back of the drive to the mobo/sound card.

I figured out what my problem was. I'm somewhat of an idiot!

The cable was connected to my sound card but wasn't seated all the way in the plug. After the YOU updates and Packman updates the audio extraction is no problem.

Well, the cable was actually not the problem.

If I stick a movie in there, for example an .avi, it works fine. However, if I try to play a music cd, still no sound even though it acts as if it's playing.

Regarding the post about audio extraction, how do you do that?

I read the instructions for Kscd but there is no checkbox for "Use direct digital playback".

Thanks in advance

SOLVED

First, thanks for the comments.

I decided to go with the analog cable because I can't get digital extraction to work with any of the software that I tried.
