Surround Sound in Suse 9.3 with onboard AC97

I have the onboard 5.1 AC97 and i was wondering how to setup up proper surround sound for games, movies etc. In ALSAmixer I've set it to 6ch, but that doesn't really do anything unless I turn on Duplicate Front, in which case it just plays stereo out of all the speakers, as opposed to proper surround sound. Has it got anything to do with setting Surround Jack Mode - Shared/Independant? Also, when I play doom 3, it plays in stereo fine, but it doesn't work when I turn on surround. He is the part of the console readout which I think explains it:

Code:
------ OSS Sound Initialization ------
opened sound device '/dev/dsp'
ioctl SNDCTL_SYSINFO failed: Invalid argument
this ioctl is only available in OSS/Linux implementation. If you run OSS/Free, don't bother.WARNING: ioctl SNDCTL_DSP_CHANNELS 6 failed: Cannot allocate memory
close sound device
WARNING: sound subsystem disabled
Any help would be much appreciated.

i get the same thing on SUSE 10.1. surround movies work, but most stuff only has stereo. didn't try it in doom3 though.
how can i at least make some fake LFE and center streams with anything under/over certain frequencies come out their respective jacks? note that i'm a newbie.
