Sticks work but buttons don't on PS3 controller

I recently got a PS3 controller working in Slackware 14.1 (w/ kernel 3.13) via USB and I got it to connect via bluetooth (w/ sqSixA). However, when trying Steam's Big Picture Mode with it, I find that I can navigate around using the joystick but the buttons don't do anything, and I can't map them in the controller settings.

Any hints would be appreciated?

Although that article is for a usb version, the issues you're having may have a similar cause and the package mentioned might be a solution.
