Steps to install 2nd HDD

Hi all - newbie question.

I have a desktop that has a single 40GB Seagate drive. I want more space, so I'm keeping the 40GB drive but installing a 2nd drive (Maxtor 200GB SATA drive). I'm currently running Ubuntu 6.06. Can someone document the steps from an OS perspective on how the OS would recognize the disk, to formatting it, to assigning it a filesystem, etc.

Thank you!

outta.

Your OS should detect the new drive when you reboot after installing it. Partition it with fdisk or cfdisk. Create a filesystem with mke2fs /dev/sdXn for ext2 or mke2fs -j /dev/sdXn for ext3 filesystem.
