There aren't too many firewire chipsets and the unsupported ones are usually in Sony kit, and onboard and such, if they claim Linux compatible, I would take the chance, not too many manufacturers are going to lie about that. The Firewire section of 2.6 is under device drivers, there are only a few chipsets in there plus the 1394raw and ieee1394 and sb2 and some other odds and ends to connect to weirder devices. As usual everything gets emulated to scsi, so as you load modules check "dmesg" for a scsi device scan.
