Unhappy soundcard not detected on fedora 5

hi, i am a new user of linux. after i installed fedora 5 everything worked just fine(sound included). then, after a couple of days, the system could not detect my soundcard. from what i found on the net, i think i mite be haveing troubles with alsa. i looked and it was not installed so after installing it i used the command #alsamixer and the aplication can not start and responds "alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device". please help me. nothing i found on the internet was very helpfull

Try switching to your root user and issuing "alsaconf" to try to redetect the sound card. Then do "alsamixer" to see if it helped. Post back, if you would, with success or failure so I can help some more if it's needed.

Fedora has a "Soundcard Detection" application in your Window Manager. Does that work?

Try a lspci from a command prompt to make sure the soundcard is seen,

Check /var/log/messages to see if there are any mentions of sound cards or sound card problems...
