Which version are you using?
When you're using a 2.6.x kernel including the newest alsa version 1.0.3 there's a bug in the implementation. I had the same problem with SuSE 9.1. I found the fix in the German SuSE mailinglist. The alsa sound module will be fixed with the next release. Meanwhile you have to fix and recompile the kernel modules:

change to the Linux kernel sources, then
cd sound/pci/ac97

edit the source file ac97-codec.c

the line
{ 0x83847658, 0xffffffff, "STAC9758/59", patch_sigmatel_stac9758, NULL },

should be
{ 0x83847658, 0xffffffff, "STAC9758/59", NULL, NULL },

instead.

Recompile kernel and modules afterwards and install the newly created kernel and modules. Afterwards it works

Slackware now uses ALSA by default, so building the latest alsa should fix any bugs, and setting up a proper ~/a.soundrc will help matters if bugs are not the problem.

Right, you don't need to build the pcmcia modules - only the SB Live 5.1 module, all the instructions are in the package that you downloaded.

Yes, the SB Live module is part of the alsa drivers package, read the instructions and they will tell you how to compile that module only.
