Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Sound Blaster 2 Audigy + network problem

I am running Gentoo linux with the 2.6 kernel and the recent installation of a Sound Blaster 2 Audigy Platinum ZS has stopped my onboard network cards from working.

As soon as I put the new card in the problem started, I know it is something to do with the soundcard as the problem goes away if I remove it. I also tried moving it to another pci slot, but that didn't help.

My motherboard is a gigabyte GA-K8NNXP (processor AMD64 3200+), and the onboard network card which I use is a RealTek RTL8169/8110 . I don't know what the other one is as it does not work under windows, and it does not work properly under Linux. I noticed the problem when dhcp stopped working during startup.

I haven't set up the soundcard under Linux yet, as I want to fix this problem first as I need to access the net to download some files.

Below is the output from the commands in the "Before you post" topic.

/sbin/lspci

Really basic voodoo you can try:

Two onboard ethernet ports, and one of them doesn't work in windows or linux? The very first thing I'd do is go into the BIOS and turn off that second ethernet card. It's just complicating things.

My experience with Athlon motherboards and sound cards -- particularly Creative (my SB Live gave me troubles) -- was that occasionally they wouldn't work in particular PCI slots. So, try moving the card to a different slot.

People will tell you motherboards are smarter these days, but there's still a lot of black magic in them. Play around with PCI slot positioning and BIOS settings and see what you can make happen. One thing I would definitely try is turning off *all* the onboard peripherals -- ethernet, sound, modem, onboard VGA if you have a separate video card -- and trying to get the sound card to work "on its own".

Thanx for your help.

I managed to find a cheap network card I had lieing around, so I simply disabled all my onboard peripherals (I hate onboard peripherals) and moved the soundcard to another slot.

I can now access my server using the cheap network card, and finaly set up my soundcard.

My brother had trouble a while ago with a Sound Blaster Live and an atholon motherboard.
