SiS7012 and system sounds

My sound card is SiS7012 and I am using RH9, with KDE.
Whenever I play a song in XMMS, the system sounds are shut of and whenever, XMMS is shut off the systems sounds are on.
What's happening

I installed the driver for it downloaded from the web and I got a message
Install OK!, reboot. I thought that this would solve the problem.
But this did not either...

What is exactly wrong

if you don't like gnome, better try a KDE-based distro instead of Red-hat
