Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 3000 series laptop into which I put a minipci wireless card extracted from an unused router - TI acx111.
When the card is in, the computer won't power down if its connected to the A/C adapter (when its running on battery, it powers down fine) : it just powers back up. I tested with a different minipci wireless card and there was no problem. I also tried the acx in another laptop, again no problem. swapping the two cards unfortunately isn't an option (antena cable...). Any ideas about how to power down this laptop?
I tried updating the BIOS, changed nothing. It also powers back up when powered down using the power button
Worst case scenario, use grub as your bootloader. "c" for command mode and type in halt and press enter. If that triggers the same reboot, then you have a non-linux related hardware issue. And/or otherwise have some sort of "wake on <anything>" setup in your bios. Or you're not really shutting down "shutdown -h now" and might be just going into a hybernation mode. wake on lan.
Hi,
checked wake on lan in the BIOS, off. Tried halting from GRUB, system simply hanged, doing nothing. when shutdown using the power button, (from hanged GRUB) it boot back up. Definitely not a Linux specific issue...
I don't know about any hacks it might have gone through and, as I said, in another laptop it works fine...
I'm at a loss, any other ideas?
Do you think writing to Acer would compel them to send me a fixed BIOS?
When the card is in, the computer won't power down if its connected to the A/C adapter (when its running on battery, it powers down fine) :
I think we are getting off track.
Are you shutting the card down? You may have to kill dhcp, run ifconfig wlan0 down, and even shut down card services if it's a pc card in a slot. If it's card dependent, surely the card causes the issue. They may have linked out a cutoff on the card, so that even when it switches off, it's powered back up. You got it out of a router, remember? The firmware on the card could even be different to the same card designed for a pc.
